About Half Tab
Half Tab is a bill splitter app for trips, shared flats, couples and dinners, made by Soft Crunch. This page explains who we are, how the app and the calculator on this site work out the numbers, and how we write and check our guides.
Who makes Half Tab
Half Tab is built and published by Soft Crunch, the developer listed on the App Store. The app first came out on the App Store for iPhone and iPad in October 2026. Soft Crunch also publishes this website, in the 21 languages the app ships in.
You can reach the people who build the app at halftab@softcrunch.net. Questions, bug reports and corrections to anything on this site all go there.
What Half Tab does, and what it does not
- It records shared expenses in a group and keeps each person's balance up to date.
- It splits each expense equally, by exact amounts, by shares or by percentage, and can leave out anyone who was not part of it.
- It records three kinds of payment: one person pays, everyone chips in to a kitty, or an outside sponsor covers part of the cost.
- It keeps a personal ledger of money you lend and borrow with one person, with an optional photo as proof.
- It works offline, and you do not need an account to start.
- It does not send or receive money. You pay each other the way you already do.
- Each group has one currency, chosen when you create it, and nothing is converted behind your back.
How the calculator works out each share
The free calculator on this site and the app use the same approach, so the shares always add back up to the bill exactly.
- Everything is counted in the smallest unit. A bill of 186.40 with an 18% tip becomes 21,995 cents (18,640 plus a tip of 3,355, rounded to the nearest cent). Currencies such as the yen, won, rupiah and dong have no cents in daily use, so they are counted in whole units.
- Each person gets the whole units first. 21,995 cents split four ways is 5,498.75 each, so everyone starts with 5,498.
- Leftover cents go to the largest remainders. Three cents are left, so three people pay 5,499 and one pays 5,498: 54.99, 54.99, 54.99 and 54.98, which add up to exactly 219.95. The calculator tells you this in a note under the result.
- A split by income uses each income as a weight. If incomes are 6,000, 4,000 and 2,000, the shares are 50%, 33.3% and 16.7% of the bill, rounded the same way.
The calculator runs entirely in your browser. What you type is never sent anywhere and is gone when you close the page. Its arithmetic is covered by automated tests that run before every update to the site.
How the app settles up
To settle a group, Half Tab adds up what each person paid and what they owe. The person who owes the most then pays the person who is owed the most, as much as either needs, and this repeats until everyone is even. Each payment clears at least one person, so a group never needs more payments than one fewer than its number of people: three for a group of four. This simple method nearly always finds the fewest payments, though in some unusual groups a hand-picked plan could use one fewer.
How we write and check our guides
- Worked examples are recalculated. Every example in a guide or calculator page is recomputed with the same arithmetic the calculator uses, so the numbers on the page match what the calculator shows.
- Claims about other apps are sourced. When a guide compares Half Tab with another app, each fact links to that app's own website, help pages or store listing, checked on the date shown on the guide.
- We are not neutral. Half Tab is our app, and our comparison guides say so. We say where another app is the better choice, and no app pays to be mentioned.
- Guides are written for each market. Each language version uses that country's money, prices and habits rather than a word-for-word translation.
- Dates are honest. Each guide shows when it was last updated, and we update the date only when the content changes.
- Mistakes get fixed. Email halftab@softcrunch.net and we will correct the page.
Guides give general information about sharing costs. They are not financial, tax or legal advice.
